Mandale Derbyshire Fossil Limestone is quarried by Natural Stone Sales sister company Mandale Stone Company, the quarry is situated at Sheldon, near Bakewell, in the heart of the Peak District. The stone is carefully extracted using the traditional method of plugs and feathers. No explosives are used. Holes are drilled into the limestone bed and metal plugs are driven in to gently split the block. This controlled approach protects the natural integrity of the stone and preserves the fossil detail that makes Mandale limestone unique.
Formed 365 Million Years Ago
This Derbyshire limestone was formed approximately 365 million years ago when the region lay beneath warm tropical seas. Crinoids, brachiopods and corals are commonly visible within the stone, and on rare occasions even a fossilised shark’s tooth may appear.
Each limestone tile carries a visible connection to this geological history.
From Quarry Block to Finished Tile
When areas of the quarry produce larger solid blocks of limestone known as dimensional blocks, these are carefully extracted and cut into slabs of varying thicknesses.
From these slabs, Mandale limestone tiles are produced in the required sizes and finishes. Depending on the desired look, the stone can be honed for a smooth matt appearance, textured for additional grip, tumbled for a softer aged character, or polished to achieve a high-shine finish.
